About ORSAR
Opportunity Regional Search and Rescue (ORSAR) is a volunteer team based in northern Alberta, serving the MD of Opportunity No. 17 and surrounding communities including Calling Lake, Wabasca, Red Earth Creek, Sandy Lake, and a wide network of rural and remote areas.
ORSAR responds when requested by RCMP and emergency services. We work alongside RCMP, local fire services, and other emergency responders to assist in missing person searches, overdue hunters and travelers, and situations where people are lost or at risk in the outdoors.
ORSAR covers a vast operational area made up of dense bush, muskeg, cutlines, and remote access roads. Our members train year-round to operate in these conditions, using navigation, ground search techniques, tracking, and coordinated team movement in terrain where access is limited and conditions can change quickly.
We maintain readiness through regular training, equipment development, and coordination with partner agencies. This includes drone operations to support search efforts and improve efficiency in large or difficult terrain.
Beyond active searches, ORSAR supports the community through prevention, education, and public safety initiatives.
We are a volunteer team made up of local people who know the land, understand the conditions, and are committed to being ready when our communities need us.
